# Bots

> An always-on AI teammate with its own instructions, memory and computer.

A **bot** is a teammate that works for your business. You chat with it like a colleague. It follows the instructions you give it, remembers what it learns, and does real work on its own computer and in the apps you connect.

## What a bot is made of

| Part | What it is | Read more |
| - | - | - |
| **Instructions** | Who the bot is and how it should work. Up to 100,000 characters. | [Instructions](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/instructions.md) |
| **Instruction files** | Named documents it reads on every run, like a rulebook or a price list. | [Instruction files](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/instruction-files.md) |
| **Memory** | Notes the bot keeps and reads back. | [Memory](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/memory.md) |
| **Skills** | Reusable step-by-step recipes. | [Skills](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/skills.md) |
| **Model** | The AI model that does the thinking. | [Models](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/models.md) |
| **Computer** | A Linux machine with a browser where it runs commands. | [Computers](https://docs.usecadence.gg/work/computers.md) |
| **Look** | A 3D character or a photo. | [Look](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/look.md) |

## Create a bot

1. Click **+** at the top of the sidebar, then **New bot**.
2. Type a name (up to 80 characters).
3. Pick a character, or keep the random one it starts with.
4. Click **Create**.

The bot opens its chat, says hello and asks what it is for. Tell it in plain words. Then open its settings to write proper [instructions](https://docs.usecadence.gg/bots/instructions.md).

## Bot settings

Open a bot's settings panel. The main sections are:

* **Name** and **Title**, with the picture beside them.
* **Instructions**, and **Files** below them.
* **Memory**, with the documents the bot keeps.
* **Credentials**, for passwords and keys the bot uses. Values are encrypted and never shown again.
* **Advanced**, with **Model**, **Thinking**, **Skills** and who can see the bot.

## Pin a bot

Right-click a bot in the sidebar and choose **Pin**. Pinned bots show as larger cards at the top of the sidebar, with their picture, name and title. Choose **Unpin** to put it back in the list.

## Who can see a bot

Under **Who can see this bot**, the bot's creator or a space admin can choose:

* **Everyone in the space**
* **Only admins**
* **Named people**, by email address or by `@domain`

## Bot menu

Right-click a bot in the sidebar for **Pin**, **Duplicate** (a copy with the same setup), **Clear conversation**, **Archive** (hide it; you can restore it later) and **Delete**.

## Credentials

When a bot needs a password or an API key, it asks for it on a protected card in the chat. You type the value there; the bot never sees it in the conversation. Values are encrypted and kept for that bot only. Manage them under **Credentials** in bot settings: **Add credential**, **Replace value** or **Remove**.
