# Chats and groups

> Talk to one bot, or put several in a room together.

## Chat with a bot

Every bot has its own chat. Type a message, attach files, and the bot replies. While it works you see what it is doing, and you can send more messages to steer it.

| You can | How |
| - | - |
| Attach files | Up to 4 per message, 10 MB each. Images, audio, MP4 video, PDF, text, Markdown, CSV, HTML, JSON and ZIP. |
| Reply to a message | Quote it, and the bot sees exactly what you mean. |
| Edit your message | The chat rewinds to that point and the bot answers the new version. You can undo the edit. |
| React | Add a reaction to any message. |
| Stop the bot | Stop its current run at any time. |
| Mention | Type `@` to mention a bot, group, routine or connected app. |

When a bot finishes a task, you get a notification.

## Group chats

A **group** puts up to 10 bots in one chat, so they can work together. Click **+** at the top of the sidebar, then **New group chat**.

Name a bot with `@` to ask it directly. Under **Who answers when you don't name anyone**, choose:

| Option | Who replies |
| - | - |
| **The first member** | The first bot in the group. |
| **Everyone, if they have something to add** | Each bot decides whether to add something. |
| **Nobody, only members I name** | Only the bots you `@` mention. |
| **Whoever fits best (picked automatically)** | Cadence picks the best bot for the message. |

You can put a member **On hold** so it stays in the group but does not answer, and give the whole group **Group instructions**.

## Bots talking to bots

Bots can message each other and hand work over. A bot uses `message_bot` to ask another bot something and `handoff_to_bot` to pass a task along.

## Other chats a bot has

Besides its main chat, a bot can have:

* A chat for each [routine](https://docs.usecadence.gg/work/routines.md), where that routine's runs appear.
* A chat for each conversation in a [channel](https://docs.usecadence.gg/work/channels.md), such as a Slack thread or a WhatsApp contact.

Bots can search their own chats with `search_chats` and `read_chat`.
